Buddha Sakyamuni
The Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, was born in the town of Lumbini to the tribal king Suddhodana. He was named Siddhartha Gautama and became the crown prince of the Shakya clan. The king shielded the young prince from all worldly forms of suffering in hopes that he would take his position as king and rule after his death.
King Suddhodana built many opulent palaces for Siddhartha to live in, and he was given every luxury imaginable. All his wishes were met, and the king made sure that Siddhartha would never need anything from the outside world. Siddhartha was curious, and when he was in his late twenties, he took a chariot ride through the countryside.
During this trip, Siddhartha was faced with three inescapable aspects of life: sickness, aging and death. He realized that no matter how much wealth or external pleasure he experienced, he would never be free from these three forms of suffering. At the end of his trip, Siddhartha encountered a wandering ascetic who appeared to be blissful and content. This was the first time he was introduced to the possibilities of living a spiritual life.
The Sakya’s
The Sakya clan, renowned for their spiritual and political influence in Tibet, played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s history and religious landscape. Their lineage, believed to descend from celestial beings, holds a revered position in Tibetan Buddhism, with members often recognized as incarnations of the bodhisattva Manjushri.
The Sakya clan’s influence reached its pinnacle during the 13th century under the leadership of Chögyal Phakpa, who was appointed as the spiritual and temporal ruler of Tibet by Kublai Khan. This marked a period of significant political and religious consolidation, with the Sakya tradition becoming the dominant force in Tibetan Buddhism.
However, the Sakya clan’s political power waned with the decline of the Mongol Yuan dynasty in China, leading to internal divisions and a shift towards a more spiritual focus. Despite the loss of political dominance, the Sakya tradition continues to thrive as one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, with its teachings and practices still widely followed today.
Shakyamuni Buddha is the founder of the Buddhist religion. Born as the crown prince of the great Shakya Kingdom. However, when he was about 29 years old, he learned of the deep suffering experienced in life by people. He left his palace life, gave up his fine garments and jewelry in order to find the causes of this suffering and the means to overcome it. After about six years of study, self-deprivation, and deep meditation he finally realized his goal. He had become an enlightened one (a Buddha).
