Shennong Yan Emperor – Divine Farmer
As part of our Healing Rime Deity Garden, a sacred space honoring the divine wisdom traditions of global healing, we have selected Shennong, the legendary Divine Farmer, to represent Chinese medicine. This garden serves as a living mandala, celebrating the sacred guardians and healers from across cultures who embody compassion, balance, and the power of natural remedies.
Honoring the Wisdom of Shennong
In Chinese culture, Shennong (神农)—also known as the “Divine Farmer” or “God of Agriculture”—is revered as a foundational figure in the development of herbal medicine and agricultural practices. Said to have lived thousands of years ago, Shennong is credited with personally tasting hundreds of herbs to understand their medicinal properties. Through his sacrifices and divine insight, he is believed to have discovered the healing potential of countless plants and established the foundations of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
One of the key texts attributed to his legacy is the “Shennong Bencao Jing” (神农本草经)—The Divine Farmer’s Materia Medica—which catalogs hundreds of medicinal herbs and their uses. In addition to healing, Shennong is also known for introducing farming techniques that sustained early Chinese civilization and for promoting a harmonious relationship with the earth.
A Universal Garden of Healing
In selecting Shennong for our Healing Rime Deity Garden, we honor not only his profound contribution to Chinese medicine but also the timeless principle that healing arises through harmony with nature. His inclusion reflects our intention to create a non-sectarian spiritual garden, where wisdom figures from diverse cultures—East and West, ancient and modern—are revered side by side, united by their commitment to the well-being of sentient beings.
Through Shennong, we invite visitors to contemplate the sacred science of herbal medicine, the power of intuition and experimentation, and the universal journey toward restoring balance in body, mind, and spirit.
The statue is intended to be stone around 180cm tall.
